Empty Promises by Pete Wilson

Another great read from Pete Wilson! After Plan B, Pete has come out with another book that hits home to the heart of a struggle that each of us has - several times over - in our lifetime.

We all long for more of something in our lives. In our endless pursuit to feel worth and acceptance we find ourselves sacrificing everything for the promise to be a little more beautiful, a little richer, a little more powerful and successful, a little more loved.  How do we break free from these empty pursuits and start chasing the only Promise that will ever satisfy? How do we uncover the hidden idols that are driving us and turn our devotion toward the one true God?  ...Learn how to replace, and not just relinquish, life's empty promises by turning your focus and worship toward Him.  It is the only thing that will set you absolutely free from the endless pursuit of everything else.

One of the things I enjoy about Pete's writing is how he presents these inspired words in very real, modest, and engaging detail.  Using examples from his own life experiences, Pete discusses such idols as: achievement, approval, power, money, religion, and beauty, and how each of these are only a shadow and a poor substitute of what we truly desire. He provides insight on how to shift our focus onto the true Promise that will bring us into a more satisfying existence in this world.

"We think what we want is a bigger title, better looks, more popularity, larger sums of money, the perfect spouse. However, what we really want is the person we were made for - Jesus - and the place we were made for - heaven."

Not preachy, not a 12-step program...This book is a genuine, heartfelt look at idols that can so easily distract us, and practical strategies to help us refocus.

Sleep

I have been sleep deprived lately. This morning I slept in, awaking feeling much more refreshed than I have of late. Neglecting sleep, every part of me suffers - and so do those around me.
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”~Matthew 8

Even Jesus needed his rest and sleep!

Don't end up sleep deprived...You are no good to anyone when you are maxed out. Take care of yourself, and let God take care of you...

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety. ~Psalm 4:8
